Every time a new version of Office arrives, a phrase echoes around offices – “It looks the same”. Word 2010 is no different, but some small and useful improvements quickly start to make their presence felt.
In a similar way that formatting changes could be previewed before selecting them in Word 2007, copy and paste functions have been improved to enable the user to see the effect of pasting text into a document before committing to the act – not a game changer, but one of those features that users quickly become accustomed to. The backstage view mentioned previously is perhaps best employed in Word, bringing the document preview and print selections into one place.
A new screenshot tool will assist those creating software related documents, as will the navigation pane for quickly viewing the structure of a document and jumping to relevant sections. Further formatting options include improvements to Word Art and improvements in the area of inserting images, allowing the user to perform simple editing and add special effects.
Nothing in the application is an enormous improvement, but Word 2010 somehow does manage to stretch its lead over the free and online alternatives.
In the next article we will look at the main new features of Excel.
