Of all the Office applications, Excel seemed to benefit the most from the introduction of the Ribbon when it first appeared in 2007, and the 2010 version confirms this usability win, providing galleries of formatting options and charts without requiring the cumbersome routine necessary in the 2003 and earlier versions of trying each chart in turn to select which one is most appropriate. The time savings in the graphing area are significant if you regularly resort to pushing Excel in these areas, and it’s precisely this area that has been extended further with the 2010 version. If you’ve ever produced a graph for an array of data only to be presented with an unreadable chart of erratic lines, then Excel 2010 may just be for you. Sparklines allow to you graph the trends of data on individual rows – think of it as a mini graph held in a cell for each row of data. The clarity that this feature brings is remarkable and the ease with which it can be applied is impressive.
For users of large spreadsheets, the 64 bit version of the application suite should keep them happy, raising the size and calculation performance considerably. Beware however, the 64 bit versions will break all of the existing add-ins, so only go for it if you really need this capacity.
Elsewhere, conditional formatting and chart functions have been given greater flexibility and many more formatting options. Numerous minor improvements have also been made, and – interestingly – a bunch of bugs and accuracy problems have been fixed that have been with Excel from the start.
The stand out feature is probably the sparklines, making Excel a good progressive improvement.
